This Mandela Day, TEARS Animal Rescue is launching a series of projects dedicated to creating a lasting legacy. Every initiative is designed to build and maintain safe, comfortable, and enriching spaces where rescued animals can heal and thrive.
Cape Town, South Africa (29 June 2026) – It is nearing that time of the year again when the Madiba spirit tugs at the heart of South Africans to do an act of kindness that will create lasting change.
This coming Mandela Day, TEARS Animal Rescue is inviting the public to give 67 minutes to the dogs and cats who rely on them.
There are several awesome ways you can show your support by volunteering at the kennels or cattery to build cleaner, safer, more enriching spaces.
Participation requires a fee of R200 per person, and you can choose a project that speaks to you and make a hands-on impact:
- The Painting Project helps brighten TEARS’ kennels and cattery with a fresh coat of paint
- The Cleaning Project aims to prep the cattery for its move and help deep-clean the puppy areas
- The Gardening Project aims to plant pet-friendly flowers for outdoor enrichment for our animals
“Each project includes materials. We just need your time and to create lasting change for animals waiting for homes,” TEARS said.

For businesses, TEARS Animal Rescue is offering exclusive Corporate Volunteer Packages for groups of up to eight participants.
“These hands-on projects provide an opportunity for colleagues to work together while helping us create a better environment for the dogs and cats who rely on us every day. The Corporate Volunteer Package includes all materials required to complete the project, as well as a Section 18A tax certificate.”
Beyond the impact volunteers will make on the day, they will also have plenty of four-pawed cheerleaders nearby, offering tail wags, curious supervision, and a reminder of exactly who they’re helping.
“Every project has been designed to leave a meaningful and lasting legacy, helping us maintain safe, comfortable, and enriching spaces for the animals in our care.”
