Matric Dance

The young ladies from Assumption Convent School in Johannesburg donated their matric dance shoes, many only worn that night, to other young ladies looking forward to their own dances.

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 March 2023) – Dario Gouveia started collecting shoes over six years ago for his organisation called Sole2Sole. Within the first three months of collecting, he had 6000 pairs of shoes for charity; today, he has collected over 325,000 pairs of shoes. The Assumption Convent School ladies decided to donate their matric dance shoes, most of which were brand new, to give back to other young ladies with upcoming matric dances.

Dario founded Sole2Sole after seeing a child on the street with no shoes and sore-looking feet. He wondered how many other children were suffering this way and decided to start collecting shoes to give to children in need. Between himself and his sister Liana, they started the cause with 14 pairs of shoes and went from there.

The Assumption Convent School Grade 12s decided they would each donate a pair of shoes to the organisation. Many of the young ladies decided to donate their matric dance shoes to the cause. The need for high heels is often overlooked when shoes are donated but as Zita, Dario’s mom shared, they have an important role come dance season.

“Matric dance shoes are a huge need. Every girl should feel like a princess on their special day.
This is a stunning, compassionate gesture from the Assumption Convent Girls.”

If you have any formal footwear, men’s and women’s, you can reach out to Sole2Sole via Facebook to arrange a drop-off.

They will also be launching the Winter Footwear collection campaign soon, so stay tuned for more!
