Locals Helping Locals has a group dedicated to helping Sassa pensioners; recently one of the admins highlighted a pensioner making dog chews to earn some extra money.
Cape Town, South Africa (16 August 2023) – A group on Facebook “Charity Locals Helping Locals for Sassa Pensioners”, has been making a huge difference in the lives of pensioners in South Africa. Focusing on the elderly that only receive the small state grant, they provide food hampers to those in need as well as promote any skills or services these pensioners may provide. They recently helped a pensioner reach a whole new market for his homemade dog chews.
The charity group welcomes support in all forms, whatever their pensioners cannot use, is added to a monthly jumble sale and the proceeds are added to the funds used to purchase food packs. The goal is to make sure that no senior citizen is left to struggle or go without.
We recently learned about the group when one of the admin’s, Johanna Kotze, shared a post about a pensioner working to make a few extra rands by selling homemade dog chews. The chews, made from sturdy fabrics, are woven tightly to make a fun rope for dogs to pull on. The funds raised through the sale of his chews, help cover his expenses. This particular pensioner also sells his chews at the Milnerton Flea Market so keep an eye out for him there.
This is just one of hundreds of stories they share. The team of volunteers is committed to making a difference. Just last week they delivered an emergency food parcel to a senior citizen that had no food to take with his heart medication.
While the group’s focus is on uplifting Sassa pensioners, it is also a forum for those with queries and struggles about the grant process.
