The Angel Network has put out a plea for assistance in helping Dignity, an informal recycler, who was badly injured after being hit by a car.

Johannesburg, South Africa (31 January 2024) – Informal recyclers are unsung heroes in the fight against overflowing landfills. These men and women are responsible for tonnes of recyclable goods being taken to buyback centres instead of ending up in a landfill. Sadly, one of these environmental heroes is facing a long road to recovery after being hit by a car. Thankfully, the Angel Network is trying to help him.

The Angel Network heard Dignity’s story and quickly stepped in to be the go-between for people wanting to lend a helping hand.

“Please help us help Dignity, a recycler whose trolley was hit by a car last weekend, causing him to fall hard and opening a very nasty wound on the knee. He was taken to hospital and told that he can’t walk for about 3 months. He is now not able to earn a living.”

Dignity has a plan for when he cannot work. He has a place in Orange Farm where he can go to recover, he just needs to cover his expense while there, pay for his spot in a taxi as well as for a friend who will be helping him get to the area.

Not only does he have a space to recover over the next three months, he also has a temporary job in mind as he is not prepared to sit idally.

“His plan is to rent a place for about R500 a month in Orange Farm. Sadly he can’t bend his knee and so will take up 3 seats in the taxi. He has a friend who will travel with him and needs R200 for the taxis. So R600 in all. He wants to sell sweets in the meantime.

We are appealing to people to please consider donating so that Dignity is able to purchase sweets, snacks and cool drinks to sell? He also needs money for surgical spirits, painkillers and cottonwool pads as well naphteline balls to keep the flies away and the taxi fare.”

Should anyone like to donate products such as sweets, cool drinks or snacks for Dignity to sell, please reach out to Glynne on WhatsApp using the phone number here.
