The big machines are lifting large amounts of concrete at the George Construction Site Collapse, the hope is to find more people in the coming hours.
George, South Africa (09 May 2024) – It has been three days since the tragedy of the George construction collapse happened and helpers are working day and night to save as many lives as possible. Support from community and beyond is still greatly needed.
On the afternoon of the 6th of May 2024, a multi-storey construction site collapsed on Victoria Street in George, Western Cape. The tragic event has been reported by the George Municipality, and they have continued to update the public since then.
The latest update includes new rescue numbers and a continued reminder of information for the public who want to lend a helping hand to the men and women who are working tirelessly to shift the rubble and find the construction workers who are still missing.
At the time of the tragic accident, 75 workers were reportedly within the building site, that number has since been changed to 81. At the time of reporting this with the 9 am update, 37 workers had been removed from the rubble and sadly, eight had passed away. There are still 44 people unaccounted for.

The bigger rubble is now being shifted so the hope is that more survivors will be found, and that the families that are waiting for their loved ones, can find closure.
For those wanting to help, the teams need drinking water, Lucozade, wine gums, or any food for the emergency services while they are on site. Delivery of these items can be taken to the tent site via Ivy Street at 79 Victoria St, Delplan Consulting which is being manned by Gift of the Givers and Herman Pienaar of LoveGeorge.
