A new skills development programme in Cape Town is gearing up to empower 955 young people from informal settlements with the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate investing R77 million into the programme!

Cape Town, South Africa (19 July 2024) — In some very good news for young people from informal settlements in Cape Town, the City has announced a new skills development programme set to empower 955 people between the ages of 18 and 35 with work.

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is aiming to invest R77 million into the programme that will give young people the opportunity to become City employees as janitors on an 18-month temporary contract.

Under the Directorate’s Informal Settlements Basic Services branch, the new labour force will also help make a big difference in informal settlements by keeping facilities clean—essential to the well-being of residents.

But, serving their communities is only the starting point for the participants; paving a path to more prosperous futures with upskilling.

The City of Cape Town shares that “the successful candidates will be able to complete accredited training (with NQF credits) in the following fields: plumbing, computer literacy, customer relations, driver’s license and financial literacy.”

Through the new skills development programme, young people will help bridge a current skills gap, gain at least a year of work experience, learn new skills beyond their jobs and get them into the groove of social integration and work ethics.

Those looking to apply can do so via the City’s EPWP jobseekers database or at their nearest sub-council office.
