Marloth Park Honorary Rangers are tackling the veld and grazing grass crisis by planting precious flora and animal food in a unique nursery patch!
Marloth Park, South Africa (25 July 2024)—Marloth Park Honorary Rangers (volunteers who preserve indigenous flora and fauna in the park) have undertaken a clever and community-centric way to combat overgrazing thanks to the little nursery patch that could.
The nursery patch project (AKA the Plant Propagation Project) is one way that the Marloth Park Honorary Rangers are fighting the veld and grazing grass crisis in the park, with different honorary rangers propagating species-rich, Indigenous flora to help revive the parkland as well as private land.
“Many of [the flora] are impossible or difficult to buy,” says the Marloth Park Honorary Rangers team.
“It’s not just grass, but many shrubs and flowers too that are also browsed out by our over-population of animals…not only are they pretty, they are important animal food.”
In a single hole of the nursery, a food source for animals (like the white berry-bush) is planted, while in a ring around the central bush, the likes of giant carrion flowers, aloe chabaudii and komatiensis and succulent Huernia hystrix are primed to flourish—not without topping of yellow mouse whiskers and wild sesame.
Finished off with grazing grass seeds and thorns for protection, the community behind the project now waits eagerly for the flora to flourish.
The nursery patch project is open to all green thumbs and those interested in making more animal food and conserving proudly South African treasures.
