The growing mounds of waste in his community sparked a flame to make a difference in Lindokuhle Latha. By recycling from home, collecting waste in his community and honing his skills to start a recycling venture of his own, Lindokuhle is playing his part toward a cleaner and greener future.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (31 October 2024) – Lindokuhle Benson Latha, a young man from an underserved KZN community, is a shining example of how one person can make a significant difference.

Inspired by the overflowing landfills in his neighbourhood, he embarked on a mission to transform waste into opportunities.

Starting small, Lindokuhle began recycling at home and soon expanded his efforts to community waste collections. By selling recyclable materials to the Use It NPO, he not only cleaned up his community but also generated income.

His passion for helping others extended beyond environmental conservation. As a Campus Health and Wellness Coordinator at a TVET college, Lindokuhle initiated a “Pad a Girl” initiative, collecting white paper to fund the distribution of sanitary pads to underprivileged girls.

After losing his job when his contract ended at the college, Lindokuhle’s passion for recycling remained undeterred.

It wasn’t long before he was introduced to a skills development programme by the Social Employment Fund through Use It NPO in partnership with Duzi-uMngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT).

“This programme has helped me sustain my family during a challenging time and equipped me with tools I needed to move forward,” Lindokuhle said.

The training and mentorship from the programme empowered Lindokuhle to establish his company; Kayise Cleaning and Waste Collections.

Lindokuhle’s latest achievement includes securing a recycling pilot project at a college and surrounding schools in Appels Bosch, Ozwathini.

By recycling and addressing waste concerns with so much determination, Lindokuhle is not only shaping his own destiny but also contributing to a more sustainable future.
