The Animal Welfare Society Response Team has emerged as saviours and the hope that shines brightest for vulnerable animals amid the sweeping cold front that has hit Cape Town hard.

Cape Town, South Africa (26 June 2025) – When the heavens open and nature unleashes its wrath, it’s often the most vulnerable among us, the hooved, the clawed, and the pawed, who bear the brunt of the devastation. Yesterday, Cape Town was hit by persistent rain, leading to widespread flooding in several areas, leaving the voiceless in danger.

Bringing some sense of relief to the chaos was the Animal Welfare Society Response Team, which has been on the ground, actively assisting communities and animals affected by the extreme weather and widespread flooding across the city.

“We went door-to-door to ensure animals were safe and not in immediate danger. We checked where animals were being kept and advised owners on how to better protect them from the rising waters,” Animal Welfare Society SA said.

The compassionate mission involved relocating livestock to higher ground, away from flooded areas where the risk of injury was high. For dogs found without shelter and drenched from the rain, the response team quickly assembled makeshift shelters to provide them with some warmth and protection.

“We also engaged with pet owners, urging them to bring animals indoors and to take necessary precautions as the bad weather continues over the next few days.

“We are doing everything we can to reach as many animals as possible, working tirelessly to prevent harm and ensure their safety during these difficult conditions,” the team assured.

While their work is not done, these brave men and women have emerged as tireless guardians and compassionate heroes venturing into the very heart of the storm to rescue those who couldn’t save themselves.

For all this, and all they continue to do even now as inclement conditions continue, we thank and applaud them!
