Two quick-thinking women and a dedicated rescue crew have spared a family an awful fate after being caught in treacherous rip currents.

Sardinia Bay, South Africa (18 July 2025) – A father and his two sons are thankful to be safe and back on dry land after a tragic incident where they were caught in rip currents and swept out to sea while swimming in the shallow surf at Sardinia Bay.

According to NSRI Gqeberha, the duty crew CWR (Coastal Water Rescue) and the Gqeberha water rescue network were activated following reports of a drowning in progress in the area on Tuesday, 15 July.

The incident was thankfully witnessed by two local females, one of whom was a former lifeguard at Sardinia Bay. Without hesitation, this brave Good Samaritan sprang into action, entering the waters to assist the struggling father and his 15-year-old son, while her friend raised the alarm.

The youngest son, a resourceful eight-year-old, managed to make his way back to shore unassisted and uninjured.

“While responding, it was confirmed that it appeared that three casualties had reached rocks but appeared to be unable to get to shore,” says Mark Dawson, NSRI Gqeberha station commander.

On arrival on the scene, an NSRI rescue swimmer and two CWR rescue swimmers launched into the surf and, through a combined effort, the father and son were safely moved from the rocks and brought to shore, with the former lifeguard’s invaluable assistance.

The teenager was not injured, and the dad was transported to the hospital, where he remains in a stable condition, recovering in the care of doctors and nurses.

Quick thinking, selfless bravery, and the efficiency of dedicated rescue teams averted tragedy and blessed a dad and his sons with more days to spend together. We thank and commend these incredible heroes.
