New findings in KwaZulu-Natal suggest that these wildcats are living much closer to us, and in greater numbers than anyone expected.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (21 July 2025) – Many people in KwaZulu-Natal might be seeing African Wildcats without even realising it. These cats look a lot like the common tabby, so they are often mistaken for domestic cats. However, recent findings by FreeMe Wildlife show that the pure African Wildcat is more common in the province than expected.
FreeMe Wildlife, based in the Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, has already treated nine pure African Wildcats. These were confirmed through testing to make sure they were not hybrids. One of the most recent sightings was a mother and her kitten from the Nottingham Road area. Both cats were found to be true African Wildcats.
These wildcats are native to South Africa and play an important role in the ecosystem. They are shy and usually live far from people, but human development has brought them closer to towns and farms. This has made it easier to spot them, but also harder to tell them apart from ordinary stray cats.
FreeMe Wildlife is a rehabilitation centre that has been helping injured, orphaned, and displaced wild animals since 2008. It was founded by Adel Malan and supported by Rob Taylor, who helped build the clinic. Since opening, FreeMe has helped many species, not just wildcats. The centre cares for birds, antelopes, monkeys, reptiles, and many other animals.
The African Wildcat is just one of the special species that FreeMe is working to protect. Their work helps educate the public and gives animals a second chance in the wild.
