In honour of International Woman’s Day Google has created a doodle that remembers some of histories most influential woman, including Mama Africa
International Woman’s Day is today, the 8th of March 2017. Google has used it’s iconic ‘Google Doodle’ to honour influential woman throughout history.
The search engine has information pages on 13 of the most influential woman in history. It features woman like Sally Ride, who was the first American woman in space. Ida B. Wells, who was an African-American woman’s rights activist from the early 1900 to the 1930’s.
The search engine even honours our amazing ‘Mama Africa’, Miriam Makeba. Mama Africa was a UN Ambassador and civil rights activist. Makeba lived in exile during Apartheid, she still felt the loss during those years as her mother and other family members passed away under the regime.
“I look at an ant and see myself: a native South African, endowed by nature with a strength much greater than my size so I might cope with the weight of a racism that crushes my spirit. I look at a bird and I see myself: a native South African, soaring above the injustices of apartheid on wings of pride, the pride of a beautiful people”. – Miriam Makeba
Mama Africa became famous internationally for her songs “The Click Song” (“Qongqothwane” in Xhosa), and “Pata Pata”. Makeba used her platform to speak out against racism in America and became involved with the civil rights movement against the racial segregation in the US, and testified before the United Nations, asking for economic sanctions against the apartheid government.
In 1999 Miriam Makeba was named a Goodwill Ambassador of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Mairiam Makeba was the first African recording artist to win a Grammy and loved to perform, she did so until the day she passed in 2008.
“Her music inspired a powerful sense of hope in all of us.” – Nelson Mandela
Happy International Woman’s Day to every woman out there and thank you to every woman that has fought or is fighting for the rights of their fellow ladies!
