Community Rallies to Deliver Bales of Hay to Horses in Need

Alone, we can do little; but together, we can accomplish so much more. This was powerfully demonstrated when Janine Clarke of Barnyard Rescue in Mthatha faced losing out on donated hay due to transport challenges, before her pleas were heard by generous souls all the way in KZN who were more than happy to help.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (29 July 2025) – In a world that often feels divided, there’s one thing we South Africans hold onto with pride, a deep, unshakeable sense of UNITY. It’s in moments of standing together that spirit shines brightest, reminding us that the leaders of tomorrow are those who inspire collaboration today.

Janine Clarke of Barnyard Rescue in Mthatha recently shared a story that warms the heart and restores faith in community. Faced with the challenge of getting much-needed hay to her rescue centre, her horsebox unusable and trailer too small for the six-hour round trip to East London, Janine was on the verge of losing out on the donated hay, which merely required delivery, with no hope in sight of getting the transport arranged in time before the hay had to be out of the holding store. But then, Janine reached out one last time on Facebook, and that’s when the magic happened.

Heartland KZN, true earth angels who, despite being busy running their own rescue centre, didn’t hesitate to help a fellow animal welfare warrior. Within two days, they had arranged free transport with Stuttaford Van Lines to deliver 75 bales of hay and several bags of feed to Barnyard Rescue.

The delivery was swift, efficient, and filled with kindness, the team unloaded everything with smiles, ensuring the horses would have the essential feed.

Heartland KZN further raised a R6,500 cash donation, which was directly given to Barnyard Rescue via the Anonymous Heartland Angel Donors.

Organisations driven by kind hearts came together in this beautiful partnership, proving that when we work together, no challenge is too big and there are great rewards to reap through collaboration.
