A cheeky young elephant cow got herself really stuck. Thankfully, her group of heroes did not waver in setting her free.
Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe (25 August 2025) – Animals can find themselves in the oddest predicaments, and a cheeky young elephant cow recently proved just that. Thanks to the determination of Greg Hall and his team, this little adventurer got a second chance.
Greg, a game ranger, stumbled across the five-year-old elephant on a muddy floodplain, wedged tightly between two tree trunks. By the time Greg and his crew arrived, the young cow had already spent a long, exhausting day stuck in the same spot.
It took some real muscle (and a lot of brainstorming) to get her out. Even young elephants are no lightweights, easily tipping the scales at 1,800 kilograms or more. Plus, they’re not shy to show some attitude, especially when scared or stuck.
The rescue video captured the chaos. A tug of war between the elephant and her would-be rescuers, a rope straining with every pull. Greg’s attempt to cover her eyes with a towel for calm was quickly thwarted; she yanked it off and tossed it aside like a moody toddler.
After plenty of sweat, mud, and a good dose of patience, the team finally freed her. But true to form, the little ellie wasted no time in letting her rescuers know who’s boss. She immediately launched a charge straight at Greg! The team scattered in all directions, and luckily, the slippery mud slowed her down enough for everyone to get clear.
Not wanting to leave her alone and vulnerable, the group set off after her, determined to make sure she found her way back to her herd.
It’s another reminder that, when wild animals land in a tight spot, there are always a few good humans willing to wade in and lend a hand.
