For Hanniska van Vuuren, the game of netball goes far beyond the court. It is so much more than the accolades but about lasting impact as she journey’s through life.

Gqebherha, South Africa (29 August 2025) – For Hanniska van Vuuren, netball has always been more than just a game. From the moment she first picked up the ball in Grade 1, she was hooked. Not only on the thrill of scoring goals, but also on the joy of sharing the court with friends.

That joy still shines through today. Now in her fourth year with the Madibaz, the 21-year-old has played a key role in helping her side shoot to the top of the Varsity Netball log after two thrilling wins in Stellenbosch. Her performance against UP-Tuks even earned her the Player of the Match accolade.

But even as the results come in, Hanniska remains mindful of the bigger picture.

“It has been a really good start but we know there’s still a long way to go,” she said, stressing the importance of staying focused through the challenges that lie ahead.

Her approach is rooted in discipline and trust. By following the game plans laid out by her coaches, she believes the team has been able to execute at a high level. Yet, for Hanniska, netball is just as much about the life lessons it brings as the victories on court.

“Off the court, it’s about staying true to myself and embracing who I am. On it, I’ve learnt discipline, to follow instructions, to work with others and to be adaptable.”

Her journey has already seen her capped at U19 and U21 level, represent South Africa at the CUCSA Games, and even receive a call-up to the senior national trials earlier this year. While she did not crack the Proteas squad just yet, she sees it as motivation rather than a setback.

Hanniska’s journey is one of balance, dreaming big, working hard, and never losing sight of why she started.

“Among my most treasured memories are the friendships, the tours, the laughter and the fun with teammates. Those moments stand out above the chaos and make me happiest.”

For her, it’s about showing up, keep working, and keep enjoying the game she loves.
