Missing Dog Smurf

When Geoffrey’s furry companion Smurf went missing at the airport, a powerhouse network of animal heroes, local vets, and the community rallied to help find him. Thanks to a viral social media wave and a watchful family who stepped in to keep him safe, Smurf is finally back home where he belongs – microchipped, loved, and sleeping soundly in his dad’s arms!

Johannesburg, South Africa (02 November 2026) – On Sunday, 24 October, Geoffrey’s outing with his cherished doggo, Smurf, took a heartbreaking turn when Smurf went missing while they were travelling from Rustenburg to drop a friend off at the airport in Johannesburg. Somewhere in the rush of it all, Geoffrey’s best furry friend of nine years got lost.

Understandably, Geoffrey was in despair but remained hopeful for a miracle.

When PAWS R Us became aware of Smurf’s story, the team immediately contacted a network of humans who get things done.

“We alerted the K9 Loki team and asked them to start the groundwork, given that Geoffrey came from Rustenburg and would not have any JHB local connections. As always, Nikki and Natasha, supported by Wendy, got stuck in, alerting all local vets and SPCAs, and mapping out a ground grid-search plan,” Paws R Us said.

Together with social media posts by PAWS R US, Barking Mad, K9 Loki, and the Searchlight group on Facebook, they ensured a wide net of awareness online.

In a matter of hours, Smurf’s story went viral on social media.

While the public shared the posts, the K9 Loki team headed to the airport and started the process of searching for a scent trace of Smurf.

“Over two days, they combed the ground looking for answers, and their feedback indicated that Smurf had undoubtedly been picked up in the parking area.”

The updates, shares, and reshares continued on social media, and after a few days, the Strydom family brought a little brown dog into the Roodekruin Vet.

“Dr Michelle, the attending vet, remembered the story of Smurf, having seen the post on the Barking Mad page. When the family told her how they had been at O.R. Tambo Airport on 24 October and a little brown dog had jumped into their car, she made the connection. And just like that, the family contacted K9 Loki, and we could FINALLY celebrate a BREAKTHROUGH,” Paws R Us exclaimed.

The Strydom family had taken the dog from the airport to their home on the West Rand in a bid to keep him safe. They checked for a microchip but found none.

Then on Sunday, 1 November, the search for Smurf culminated in a touching reunion that made every effort well worth it!

Paws R Us arranged for Geoffrey to stop by their shelter under the impression that he would be speaking to local media about Smurf’s disappearance – little did he know that he was going to be reunited with his best friend!

A video captured their tearful reunion as Smurf was revealed to Geoffrey shortly after the Paws R Us team greeted and welcomed him. As Geoffrey dropped to his knees and little Smurf’s tail wagged endlessly, there was sobbing, crying, and grateful joy that was almost palpable!

Paws R Us thanked everyone who came together on-site to share in the special moment, as well as every supporter, volunteer, facilitator, and animal hero who shared the posts, spread the word, and looked far and wide for Smurf. He is safe and back home with his doting dad because of it.

“Smurf has been microchipped, and tonight, he will sleep in his home with his beloved dad. A salute to our general public for being so invested in this story and sharing to ensure that it travelled far and wide.”

What a precious, paw-fect reunion!
