When the doctor mentioned the “C-word” diagnosis, Natasché Daniels’ world was turned completely upside down, and her body was ravaged by the harsh effects of chemotherapy at just 15. But her story isn’t one of pain. It’s one of overcoming and resilience that not only saw her become a survivor, but a medical doctor who heals and restores!

South Africa (12 September 2025) – At 15 years old, Natasché Daniels was catapulted into a whole new world of doctors, hospitals and uncertainties following the unexpected diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

She recalls the day that changed everything vividly, sitting in the doctor’s room as he uttered the C-word. In that moment, everything stopped, and everything changed at the same time.

“My chemotherapy began immediately, and the hospital basically became my new home. As the days and the weeks went by, I watched how my body changed and my hair fell out. My strength just sort of withered away. This was such a huge physical battle, but it was even more so a mental one,” Natasché reflects.

During that time, she found herself continuously asking questions like “why me?” or “what did I do to deserve this?”.

“But the truth is, we don’t always get the answer to our why. But we can be rest assured that God is a good God and he’s always working things out for your good even on your darkest days.”

In the paediatric ward, Natasché met a lot of kids who were going through a similar journey. One particular girl named Siyabonga stood out to her. She was six years old and had been learning how to walk again after an operation on her leg to treat a form of bone cancer.

“On one of my darkest days, she came to my room, limping with her crutches. She stood by my side and told me everything would be okay and that tomorrow would be a better day. The resilience I was able to witness in these kids every single day really motivated me to persevere,” she shares.

Through her journey, Natasché healed and was able to return to school and matriculate. In 2020, she graduated as a medical doctor.

She smiles as she recalls spending so many of her teen years in the hospital, only to return there again – not as a patient this time, but as a doctor who heals and restores.

Through her journey, Natasché learned to see the good in everyday, to be grateful always and came to discover that we’re all braver and stronger than we think we are.

Her story is one that inspires hope in healing, overcoming and going on to flourish.

Today, she is also a Cupcakes of Hope (CoH) ambassador and is part of an amazing team that makes a significant difference in the lives of kids with cancer.

As the country celebrates National Cupcake Day on 27 September, Natasché encourages families and communities to support the NGO’s movement by buying a cupcake for a donation of R10–R20 at any of the 79 participating malls nationwide.

“Miracles happen every day, but today I want to encourage you to be the miracle in somebody else’s life,” she appeals.
