South Africa has fallen in love with a tiny survivor… a Barn Owl chick who travelled hundreds of kilometres without knowing she was on the ride of her life.
South Africa (15 September 2025) – A little bundle of feathers has reminded us once again how kindness, quick thinking and a touch of humour can change the course of a life.
This is the story of a Barn Owl chick that found itself 300 kilometres from home, after an accidental journey wedged into a load of grass destined for mushroom farming.
It all began when a tractor operator in Bapsfontein spotted a small white fluff ball tumble out of a bale of grass while offloading. He stopped immediately, “bless that man”, and called Charl du Plooy from Country Mushroom. Charl didn’t hesitate. He scooped up the terrified chick, placed her safely in a box, and reached out for help.
The South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre quickly stepped in, and as fate would have it, the story was far from over.
The team named the tiny survivor Zsa Zsa GaSpore because after her epic ‘shroom storm’ road trip, she definitely deserved a fabulous stage name.
“Fast forward ninety minutes,” the centre shared, “and our pint-sized passenger was receiving fluids, warmth, and a much-needed quiet place to decompress after her epic shroom-storm.”
For the next few weeks, Zsa Zsa will be living her best owl life: dining on five-star meals (owl style, complete with nutritional boosters), fluffing into a strong Barn Owl, and eventually joining her fellow owlets under the care of Brendan Murray from the Owl Rescue Centre. From there, she’ll be prepared for her next chapter, graduating to the skies, where she belongs, with continued support and feeding to give her the best possible chance of success.
“What an utter champignon! 🍄” the centre quipped.
