At the Owl Rescue Centre, even the owls themselves are all about making space for more!
Hartbeespoort, North West (16 September 2025) – Nature nurtures! This rescue and adoption story involves a distressed owlet saved by caring hands and two very dedicated foster parents.
The Owl Rescue Centre, alongside their faithful work dogs, have done it again. This week, they stepped in to save a tiny Spotted Eagle Owlet that had been discovered at a sawmill. Brendan from the centre brought the baby to safety at their base, and almost immediately, the little one’s life took a turn for the better.

Waiting at the centre was a surrogate Spotted Eagle Owl pair who’ve become ‘parents’ many times over.
In just the last two years, they’ve raised more than 33 rescued owlets alongside a few of their own chicks. Stepping up to raise young ones who otherwise wouldn’t have survived is why they’re heroes, too.
The moment Brendan returned back to base with baby in tow, a video shows the pair swooping into action as they hear the little owlet’s call. As Brendan slowly moves to place the small rescue in a tree near their owl box, the two adults waste no time in making it clear that this owlet was now theirs!
The little owlet had been ‘clicking’ at Brendan, a sound that young Spotted Eagle Owls make when they feel unsure or threatened, part of their natural defence. But that anxiety seemed to ease the instant the surrogate pair closed in. A sign that the little one felt safe and accepted.
Raising owlets is no small task, especially at this scale. But at the Owl Rescue Centre’s mom and dad don’t do it all alone. Food is supplied daily and left at a platform, so when the babies beg for meals, the parents can swoop down, collect it, and get back to the serious business of raising strong, healthy owls!
Spotted Eagle Owls are one of South Africa’s most common owl species, identifiable by their mottled feathers and striking yellow eyes.
Watching a pair adopt a baby that isn’t theirs is always special. With the help of the Owl Rescue Centre, this little owlet has been given a fresh start, safe under the watchful eyes of parents who’ve proven that family doesn’t have to mean blood, even in nature.
