Every little life matters; the FreeMe team always does a good job of highlighting this!
Howick, KwaZulu-Natal (02 October 2025) – FreeMe Wildlife recently welcomed a rare little patient, a Natal Midlands Dwarf Chameleon with an injured back foot.
You don’t see these little guys in action very often. If you do, there’s a good chance you’d only be spotting one as they’re solitary. What makes them extra special is that they’re found only in the KZN Midlands. Sadly, they are listed as endangered.
Small as they are (they only grow up to about 11cm long), they play a big role in the ecosystem by keeping insect numbers in check and feeding other wildlife.
And, as we mentioned, they’re endangered. Habitat loss, pesticides and pets in gardens, and even the illegal pet trade all threaten their survival.
This one arrived looking particularly fragile, but with the right care it’s on the road to recovery.
We love that the FreeMe team often goes out of their way to spotlight the smaller critters and creatures that come into their care. We’re bombarded with (really amazing) conservation and rescue stories, but rarely do we see others shining a light on the little guys who are also just as important.
Look at this little dude. Isn’t he beautiful?
