From their 60s to 70s, South Africa’s masters wrestlers showcase that skill and experience can take you all the way to the podium.
Warsaw, Poland (06 October 2025)- The 2025 Masters Wrestling World Championship for competitors over 60 concluded with a remarkable showing from South Africa’s team. In the Greco-Roman events, all three wrestlers who competed secured podium finishes, demonstrating their skill, dedication, and resilience. Sandy Macdonald and Roelf Laubscher proudly claimed medals in their respective categories, while Christo Krause celebrated his first-ever medal at a World Championship. A moment worth celebrating for him and the team.
The championship was not without challenges. A flu outbreak affected several team members, forcing Francois Pienaar, Willem Putter, and Johan Voight to withdraw from competition. While it was disappointing not to see these veterans in action, their support and presence were a strong morale boost for the team.
Age proved no obstacle for South Africa’s wrestlers. Four team members are over 70, one is 67, and the youngest is 64. Their performances demonstrated not only technical skill but also extraordinary determination, endurance, and passion for wrestling. The ability of these athletes to compete at such a high level is a testament to their dedication and inspires fellow wrestlers and sports enthusiasts alike.
The South African wrestling community has praised the team for their commitment, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Their achievements on the world stage highlight both individual excellence and the strength of South African masters wrestling, proving that age is no barrier to greatness.
