The school’s scouts show resilience and teamwork during the 24-hour raft-building and endurance event, with strong performances despite difficult weather.
Cape Town, South Africa (23 April 2026) – Learners from Edgemead High School took on one of the toughest editions yet of the Kon-Tiki Challenge, showing teamwork in difficult conditions.
The Kon-Tiki Challenge is an annual scouting competition where teams build their own rafts using drums, poles and ropes, before spending 24 hours living on them. The event tests not only practical skills, but also endurance, problem-solving and teamwork. This happens under poor conditions that can quickly change.
This year, the weather added another layer of difficulty, with heavy rain and tough conditions making it a demanding weekend for all involved. Despite that, the Edgemead team pushed through and completed the challenge with determination.
Representing the school on the raft were Sebastian Porter (Assistant Patrol Leader), Owen Oosthuizen, Elijah Vosloo and Lloyd Lomberg, part of a six-member crew that carried the EHS name throughout the event. Oosthuizen’s effort stood out in particular, as he balanced orchestra commitments before returning to rejoin his team.
The school also acknowledged the contribution of past pupil Dean Oosthuizen, who assisted the team during the weekend.
There was also success away from the water, with Evan Butler claiming victory in the cross-country event, navigating the same wet and challenging conditions faced throughout the competition.
While the final rankings may not have told the full story, the experience highlighted what the Kon-Tiki Challenge is really about. It’s a unique platform that brings young people together to learn, adapt and support one another, while also shining a light on scouting tradition.
