Legends of Waves: Masters Surfers at the 2025 SA Championships

The 2025 South African Masters Surfing Championships brought together some of the country’s most experienced surfers for three days of fierce competition.

Cape Town, South Africa (22 October 2025) – The 2025 South African Masters Surfing Championships have wrapped up in true style! A perfect mix of strong surf and unstoppable energy from surfers who prove that age is just a number when it comes to chasing waves.

Held at Long Beach in Kommetjie, Cape Town, the event served up everything from a range of conditions. From calm, picture-perfect waves to bigger, challenging winds on Finals Day. And while the nearby Cape Town Marathon may have been cancelled due to high winds, the Masters surfers thrived in it.

The competition drew some of South Africa’s most seasoned surfers, from 35-year-olds with something to prove to sixty-somethings still taking up the waves like pros.

The atmosphere matched the surf. All spirited, warm, and buzzing with camaraderie. From the lively opening night at Jack Black Taproom to the celebratory closing function at Camel Rock Restaurant, the event was a blend of competition and community.

Among the weekend’s standout moments was the impressive showing from Buffalo City Surfriders, who dominated across divisions and walked away with the coveted Masters Cup.

Also turning heads was Port Alfred’s Warwick Heny, who stole the show in the Over-50 Men’s Final. His explosive backhand turns earned him one of the event’s highest heat scores and a well-deserved win.

In the Over-35 divisions, two familiar names came out on top. Local favourite Dr Roxy Davis used her deep knowledge of Long Beach to pick off the best waves and secure the Women’s title, while defending Men’s Champion Clinton Gravett held his nerve to take back-to-back wins.

When the final waves settled, the SA Masters Surfing Championships proved its celebration of resilience and a lifelong love for the ocean.
