Ivana’s Jumbo Boerewors Sausage Rolls combine spiced mince, buttery puff pastry, and creativity for the ultimate taste of home, as her recipe celebrates simplicity and flavour.

South Africa (06 November 2025) – There’s something undeniably South African about a good garage pie. That flaky, golden pastry and savoury filling that hits just right on a long road trip or after a late-night stop. Now, thanks to Ivana Sanshia Austermayer, you can recreate that familiar flavour with a boerie-inspired twist, the Jumbo Boerewors Sausage Roll.

The recipe combines all the charm of a garage pie with the richness of a boerewors roll, creating a flaky, juicy, and proudly local snack that’s perfect for any occasion.

The process is simple: prepare the filling with beef mince, garlic, onion, and spices like coriander, nutmeg, and allspice for that signature boerie flavour. Roll it up in store-bought puff pastry (no shame there, Ivana insists), seal the edges, and give it an egg wash with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and sea salt flakes for that golden, bakery-style finish.

Whether you keep them classic or roll them into spirals, the result is comforting. A flaky, crust wrapped around savoury, spiced filling that tastes just like home.
