Just when you thought your dinner at a restaurant couldn’t get any more exciting, three hippos decided to wander through the streets of St. Lucia, giving diners a front-row seat to nature.

St. Lucia, South Africa (20 November 2025) – Sometimes, reality is even wilder than what you see in the movies. In St. Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal, three hippos decided to take a stroll through town, much to the delight of locals and visitors at Alfredo’s Restaurant. The scene looked like something straight out of Madagascar, with the casually wandering past tables.

Caught on camera, the footage shows the hippos moving together, calmly exploring their surroundings as diners watched. It’s the kind of moment that makes you stop and remember just how seamlessly wildlife and daily life coexist in some parts of South Africa.

While people sometimes joke that wildlife roams the streets here like in a movie, this playful visit from the hippos proved it can actually happen.

There was no danger, just a reminder that in some places the boundaries between human life and wildlife can blur.

And for those wondering if South Africans really live with wild animals on the streets, it’s rare. Sometimes, the “wild” visits in the most unexpected way.
