Jean-Marc Johannes has been making waves on the international skateboarding stage, recently featured in GQ’s Young & Gifted series
Cape Town, South Africa (25 November 2025) – Jean-Marc Johannes has officially rolled into the spotlight with a feature in GQ’s Young & Gifted Series, which celebrates South Africans daring to dream big and leave an impact. The Athlone-born skater has gone from training on Cape Town’s taxi ranks and train stations to landing on the global stage, becoming a name synonymous with inspiration.
Jean-Marc started skating at eleven in a neighbourhood with no formal skate parks. Chronic asthma might have slowed others down, but for him, it sharpened focus and discipline. These qualities have propelled him from local streets to international competitions. Today, he has been inducted into the Guinness World Records, breaking multiple records, including the most nollie heelflips in a minute and the most 360-frontside spins in thirty seconds, showcasing not just talent but relentless practice and precision.

His international accolades are also impressive: gold at the 2015 FISE Street Video Global Contest, first place in the 2016 FISE World Series in China, top-three finishes at events in Russia, France, Switzerland, and more. Recently, he placed sixth in the Global Open Qualifications of Kardo 7, sharing space with top pros from around the world, including Argentina, Russia, and Peru.
Beyond medals and records, Jean-Marc is deeply committed to his community, mentoring young skaters and showing that obstacles can be turned into opportunities.
Looking ahead, he gears up for the FISE Battle of Champions in March 2026, marking the first time a South African skateboarder will compete in this international amateur division. The stage is set, the boards are ready, and the world is about to witness more of the talent that he has proudly spotlighted.
