After a difficult year recovering from a knee reconstruction, talented artist Giffy returned to social media with a powerful “proof of life” post, sharing how physical pain didn’t deter his creative drive and taught him a profound lesson in appreciating his body and finding gratitude.

Durban, South Africa (27 November 2025) – The “proof of life” post has become a trendy way to signal a return to social media after a personal digital break. Talented mural artist Giffy’s latest post, however, offered more than just a check-in, as he shared some food for thought we can all take something away from.

After a tough year of recovering from a double ligament knee reconstruction surgery after an accident, Giffy admits that regaining his strength and “getting back to normal” took its toll. However, what amused him through it all was that his creative drive didn’t slow down, regardless of his knee pain.

“And so, I have been painting like a madman this year since being able to walk again,” Giffy shares.

Looking back at one of his artworks where he painted a trio of life-size Humpback whales on Marine Drive on the Bluff, Giffy opened up about realising how hard he works his physical body and how he’s taken it for granted.

Giffy has shed literal blood, sweat and tears for his art, mostly happy tears as being an artist is a blessing in itself, and has come to appreciate his body for allowing him to continue to do what he loves most.

And he’s encouraged us to always remember that there’s always something to be grateful for.

“Thank your knees… Look down to your knees right now, take a moment, and say thank you. Thank your elbows, thank your hands. Thank your eyes and ears. There is so much to be grateful for,” he says.

He further apologised for not posting his work online often, but did share the disclaimer that he believes art belongs in real life, on walls that humans see, not on screens.

“For example, seeing whales on a screen is one thing; seeing whales LIFE SIZE in reality is another thing. I want to make real-life art! And in public places, this will always be my priority as long as I can wield paint.”

But with that said, he does promise to share a post every day of December showing different paintings from 2025. So art lovers get excited, and Giffy, thank you for the nugget of wisdom on being thankful!
