This holiday season, the stage lights are shining brighter for everyone as the KZN Young Performers Project presents a special “relaxed” performance of their ‘A Fairytale Christmas Carol’ musical, ensuring families with different needs can experience the magic of theatre in a supportive and comfortable environment.

Durban, South Africa (27 November 2025) – The A Fairytale Christmas Carol musical production will be showcased at the Playhouse Drama Theatre in Durban from 5 – 21 December, with one especially “relaxed” performance to look forward to.

Presented by the KZN Young Performers Project (YPP) management team, a special “relaxed” performance will take place on Friday, 5 December at 2.30 pm, where formal theatre etiquette of silence and stillness won’t be enforced. This will enable people and families with different needs or sensory challenges to feel welcome and comfortable in a supportive environment.

The lights will be dimmed but not darkened throughout. For this performance, before the show starts, some of the main characters will come in front of the curtains to introduce themselves so that patrons become familiar with the performers ahead of the show.

“We recognise that traditional theatre settings can sometimes present challenges for individuals who require a more accommodating environment,” says Des Govender, who heads the YPP Project.

“In response to this need, we are pleased to offer a relaxed performance of A Fairytale Christmas Carol.  During this specially designated show, we will maintain a partially lit auditorium and our ushers will not enforce traditional etiquette rules. This thoughtful approach aims to create a welcoming space for patrons who may not typically feel at ease in a conventional theatre setting.”

The Young Performers Project invites individuals and families who would benefit from a more relaxed atmosphere to attend this unique performance. The goal is to share the magic of live theatre with a broader audience and provide an inclusive experience for all.

The cast of A Fairytale Christmas Carol features 80 children from 45 schools from throughout KZN – from as far as Richards Bay. The youngest of whom is nine. Musical numbers include a mixture of original songs with familiar and much-loved carols as well as a few surprises.

This original Charles Dickens’ festive season family-friendly production blends familiar fairytale characters with the well-known story about how the miser Scrooge has a change of heart for Christmas.

In the true spirit of Dickens, attendees will rediscover the importance of love, family, friends, kindness, compassion …. and joy.
