The organisation is encouraging the public to look beyond appearances and pay closer attention to the living and working conditions of security dogs.
Boksburg, South Africa (29 April 2026) – The Boksburg SPCA is calling on the public to become more aware of the welfare of security dogs, highlighting the often-overlooked conditions in which many of these animals live and work in every day.
While security dogs are commonly seen guarding businesses, warehouses and industrial properties alongside handlers, the organisation says there is growing concern around the environments many of them are exposed to for long periods of time.
According to the SPCA, these dogs often spend hours patrolling hard surfaces such as cement and tar before being confined to cages or kennels for the remainder of their shifts. In some cases, they may be exposed to loud machinery, harsh weather conditions and limited opportunities for proper rest or enrichment.

The organisation says that although many security dogs may appear physically healthy, animal welfare goes far beyond whether a dog is fed or fit. Mental stimulation, humane living conditions, freedom of movement and emotional well-being are all important parts of an animal’s quality of life.
The SPCA is encouraging members of the public to pay closer attention to the conditions in which security dogs are kept at shopping centres, businesses and industrial sites.
They are also reminding the public that concerns can be reported anonymously to their local SPCA, allowing inspectors to investigate whether animals are being kept within humane standards.
The organisation says security dogs dedicate their lives to protecting people and property, and deserve care, dignity and compassion in return.
