What began as an ambitious goal to make 67 blankets for Mandela Day has blossomed into the most incredible movement, which has, for 12 years now, wrapped our most vulnerable in warmth, dignity and care.
Johannesburg, South Africa (28 January 2026) – Back in December of 2013, Carolyn Steyn challenged herself to make 67 Blankets for Mandela Day. A challenge she soon realised would require the help of friends to achieve. And so she did, in doing so, started something truly special. Something that has taken on a life of its own, honouring Nelson Mandela’s legacy by bringing “warmth stitched with love” to those he left behind.
Today, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day is a powerful global movement. It has captured the hearts of corporations and celebrities alike, both in South Africa and abroad, who donate their time and skills to knit blankets and scarves that reach those who truly need them.
This past Sunday, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day celebrated its 12th birthday, marking over a decade of warmth, compassion and community action.
The milestone does, however, come at a particularly difficult time for Carolyn. Over the last year, she has navigated personal grief following the loss of her husband, Douw, last February, and her sister, Sharon, just eight months later. It’s been a journey she has described as a very difficult time, but one that has been comforted by the mission of 67 Blankets.

While her life looks different now, Carolyn assures supporters that the movement isn’t going anywhere.
What began as a simple call to knit blankets in the spirit of the 67 minutes has grown into a worldwide movement, wrapping our most vulnerable in dignity and care.
Twelve years on, every stitch continues to tell a story of hope – a reminder that small acts of kindness, when woven together, create lasting change.
