Thanks to the swift action of law enforcement and a powerhouse collaboration between Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital and Fourways Veterinary Hospital, a pangolin discovered during a routine roadblock finally has the fighting chance she deserves.
Johannesburg, South Africa (16 February 2026) – In a touching story of hope, healing and teamwork, law enforcement, wildlife conservationists, pilots and expert veterinarians came together to save a single life rescued from the illicit wildlife trade.
The Fourways Veterinary Hospital recently had the privilege of assisting Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (JWVH) with the medical assessment of a young pangolin named Pikkewyn.
Though Johannesburg may seem far removed from the wild spaces pangolins call home, Pikkewyn was found by the SAPS officers during a routine roadblock outside Beaufort West. Realising the weak creature’s severe condition, she was rushed into the care of CapeNature and then transported to Johannesburg with the incredible support of Airlink and Impact for Wildlife.
“She is now receiving lifesaving specialist care from the dedicated JWVH team,” Fourways Veterinary Hospital shared.
“As part of her road to recovery, Pikkewyn visited Fourways Veterinary Hospital for a CT scan, an important step to ensure she receives the most accurate medical assessment possible.”
These detailed scans will help the veterinarians working on Pikkewyn’s treatment understand the extent of her injuries and her internal health so she can be nursed back to health and hopefully be returned to the wild where she belongs.
“Often overlooked because of their shy nature and protective scales, pangolins play an important and irreplaceable part in South Africa’s ecosystems. Tragically, they are also one of the most illegally trafficked mammals in the world, which makes every successful rescue and rehabilitation feel like a true conservation victory,” Fourways Veterinary Hospital shared on the endangered species.
Pikkewyn remains in critical condition, but thanks to fast-acting law enforcement, compassionate partners, and the relentless commitment of the JWVH team, she now has a fighting chance.

The JWVH medical staff stresses the message that all pangolin patients are housed off-site at an undisclosed location to protect them and all the medical staff. Due to the animals being in high demand, they cannot risk anyone knowing where the animals are being treated.
