In Kya Sands, Victor and his crew have been the quiet heroes of their community for years, often digging into their own pockets to rebuild homes after tragedies.
Kya Sands, South Africa (16 March 2026) – “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” This quote by Coretta Scott King beautifully captures what is happening in the informal settlement of Kya Sands.
In a neighbourhood where residents face various socio-economic challenges, a group of men are stepping up to make a meaningful difference.
Not only do they help with Beanies for Beings’ outreach work, but they are also deeply invested in helping their fellow community members in any dire situation they might find themselves in.
Victor and his crew first crossed paths with the charity two years ago while on a mission of their own. They had been on the pursuit for second-hand building materials out of their own pocket to rebuild a community member’s shack that had tragically burned down.
It wasn’t too long after that that they visited the Beanies for Beings Charity Shop to see if they could be assisted with household and clothing items for that same family.
“Which we did,” shares Beanies for Beings’ Megan Botha.
“After finding out what this group do for the Kya Sands community, I knew that we would build and grow a long-term partnership for the benefit of the impoverished members within Kya Sands.”
Two years down the line, Victor and his team, together with Beanies for Beings, have touched hundreds of lives and instilled hope and joy for so many people who previously had nowhere to turn.
Recently, the crew couldn’t have been more excited when they received woodworking machinery, wood, hardware, tiles, wooden flooring, cabinetry, wheelbarrows, paint and more that will help them scale their impact even further, generously donated by Jocelyn and Chris Porter.
