From hands-on exploration to discovering the diverse fields of marine science, a group of young Durban learners got a front-row seat to the magic beneath the waves at SAAMBR’s first Marine Careers Course for the year.

Durban, South Africa (10 April 2026) – A vibrant group of young people who are already showing the makings of becoming changemakers and champions for the environment got to immerse themselves in the wonders of the marine world at SAAMBR’s first Marine Careers Course for the year.

The externally funded opportunity, part of the 75 Young Ocean Ambassadors programme, brought together a group of passionate young people selected based on how they saw themselves making a positive environmental impact in their own communities.

The Marine Careers Course offered a lot of fun, but it also allowed learners to explore the diverse marine fields under the SAAMBR umbrella. Classroom time was kept to a minimum to free up the time they could spend with the divers, scientists, biologists, aquarists, mammal and bird specialists, technicians, and animal health staff.

“They arrived each morning smelling clean and fresh and left with sand in their shoes and smelling as fishy as the staff,” the organisation said.

One child described the experience with the SAAMBR team as one of the best days of her life, while another shared how grateful he was for the guidance he had received, which he believed would shape the rest of his life.

“Without exception, all the students left on the final day, more confident and aware of what it takes to work in the marine environment. We were humbled by the impact we had on these young learners and impressed with the commitment they showed, both to their careers and towards the health of the marine environment. Our future is in good hands with these young learners as ocean ambassadors.”

The future does indeed look bright, and we can’t wait to see how this next generation will lead the way in protecting our blue planet!
