Trying to catch a sheep that doesn’t want to be caught isn’t a dignified exercise. Now imagine doing it in the mud. In the dark. In the rain! That was the Midrand SPCA’s Sunday evening.
Midrand, South Africa (27 April 2026) – On a wet and very muddy Sunday evening, the Midrand SPCA received a call about stray sheep heading toward a dangerous area. Inspector Richman Sibande responded immediately, but these animals were not going down without a fight. Or at least a flippen muddy chase.
Inspector Jerry Seemise arrived to assist and a slippery pursuit ensued. It took longer than expected. Many tackles were missed and hooves flew like horsepower.
“What followed was a slippery game of tackle-and-miss, with our Inspectors quite literally on the run… and even losing a phone in the chaos. But determination won, and eventually the team managed to safely secure both the sheep and a goat.” the SPCA shared.
The Inspectors soldiered through, because that’s just what animal heroes do. Eventually both sheep and a bonus goat were safely secured and settled in at the SPCA for the night. The owner came forward the following day to collect them.
Everyone got home safe and it was a happy ending to a very wild evening.
But the Midrand SPCA also used this rescue to shine a light, literally, on something important they need help with. Callouts often happen where they must navigate tough conditions with animals bolting in every direction.
“Our team often has to rely on vehicle headlights to see, which is incredibly difficult when animals are running and conditions are wet and uneven. This puts both the animals and our Inspectors at risk.” the SPCA shared.
The SPCA is calling for donations of high-powered, rechargeable handheld torches suitable for field work. These essential tools must be at least 1000 lumens, USB rechargeable, and water-resistant. If you can help, please reach out to the Midrand SPCA directly!
Inspectors Sibande and Seemise gave everything they had on a rainy Sunday night for two sheep and a goat, and they’d do it all again tomorrow without hesitation. That deserves every bit of support we can give them.
