Headmaster's Tribute

What started as a Headmaster’s tribute to Union High’s ‘warrior families’ blossomed into a school-wide celebration of gratitude and heart.

Graaff-Reinet, South Africa (30 April 2026) – Every good deed leaves a mark. Union High School in Graaff-Reinet recently shared a heartfelt public thank you on the school’s social media page, dedicated to a family that has stood by them time and time again.

The touching tribute deeply moved many people, with one person even commenting on the post that every school needed such ‘warrior families’.

This sentiment resonated with the school’s headmaster, William Pringle, inspiring him to write and share a letter of appreciation for all the families who help strengthen the school community.

“These are the families whose contributions go far beyond what is expected. They are the ones who show up – again and again – long after the lights have been switched off and the chairs packed away. They are present in the early mornings and late afternoons, behind the scenes at fundraisers, around committee tables, on the sidelines and in those quiet moments where something needs to be done. They do so not for recognition, but because they believe in this school, in this community and in what it stands for,” Pringle wrote.

He went on to stress that to ‘go to war’ for a school is not about conflict but about commitment.

“Standing firm when challenges arise, stepping forward when help is needed, and choosing to invest one’s time and heart into something greater than oneself. It speaks to loyalty, resilience and a profound sense of belonging. Perhaps most importantly, it speaks to legacy. Children born in such families do not merely attend our school; they embody its values.”

The Headmaster’s letter was met with much love online and sparked something special within the school community, too!

Prefects brought Pringle’s words and sentiments to life as they chose to step out of their normal routines to do a little something special: serve and show a little appreciation to their teachers.

The learners surprised staff with a thoughtful delivery of sweet treats and thank-you notes during the school day. There were bright smiles and warm hugs all around, speaking to that sense of community Pringle applauded and the importance of valuing one another.

“When our learners begin to live out the values spoken about – showing up, serving others and giving of themselves – it reflects something far deeper than any message we could write. It shows a culture taking root. A culture where kindness, initiative, heart and being of service to others are part of everyday life.”

No act of kindness is ever lost to the wind. When we show up for others, the world takes note – and this right here was one of those heartwarming moments.
