Shared by The Big Tasty Bite, this recipe combines traditional bobotie flavours with buttery puff pastry for a comforting dish packed with a touch of sweetness.

South Africa (30 April 2026) – Few dishes feel more proudly South African than bobotie, and now food creator The Big Tasty Bite is giving the much-loved classic a flaky new twist with her comforting bobotie pies.

Shared on social media with over 2000 likes, the dish is turned into a golden puff pastry with rich fillings.

The filling starts with onions cooked until beautifully caramelised before layers of flavour are added through garlic, fresh ginger and warming spices including curry powder, turmeric, cloves, allspice and white pepper. Raisins or dried apricots bring a touch of sweetness, staying true to the sweet-and-savoury balance that makes bobotie such a favourite in many South African homes.

The spiced onion mixture is then combined with beef mince, bread soaked in milk, fruit chutney and egg to create the hearty filling before being folded into puff pastry.

One of the recipe’s clever touches comes when shaping the pies. Instead of cutting through the pastry with a knife, she recommends using scissors to create strips, helping keep the filling neatly in place while baking.

It is the kind of recipe that feels equally suited to a cosy evening meal, a weekend gathering or preparing something special for the week ahead.
