Team SA continued to make its presence felt at the continental championships as young South African wrestlers fought their way onto the podium.

Alexandria, Egypt (30 April 2026) –  South Africa’s medal tally continued to grow at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Egypt, with the country’s U17 and U20 wrestlers producing another determined showing on the continental stage.

The latest round of competition brought a mix of silver and bronze medals for Team SA, with several wrestlers fighting their way onto the podium after a demanding day on the mats.

Leading the charge in the women’s U20 division was Katelyn Swan, who secured a silver medal in the 62kg category after an impressive campaign that included victories over opponents from Algeria and Tunisia. Swan showed strong attacking intent throughout the tournament before eventually falling to Egypt’s Ritag Elmalty in the gold-medal bout.

Jessica Eagar also added to South Africa’s medal haul, earning bronze in the 68kg division. Eagar opened her tournament with a confident win over Kenya’s Faith Wamalwa before narrowly missing out on a place in the final after two tough encounters against Angola and Egypt.

In the men’s U20 Greco-Roman section, Sebastiaan Nel claimed bronze in the 97kg category to ensure South Africa remained on the podium across multiple divisions.

The medals followed another encouraging outing from the U17 squad earlier in the championships. Christian Warner secured bronze in the U17 Greco-Roman 60kg division, while Stephan van der Westhuizen earned silver in the 110kg category.

South Africa’s wrestlers have continued to show resilience throughout the tournament. The championships are still ongoing, with the remaining women’s U20 and men’s freestyle events still to come as Team SA looks to add even more medals to its growing collection.
