In a single moment on the rugby pitch, a C5/C6 spinal cord injury changed everything for Anthony Stearns. But while the injury may have altered his physical path, it couldn’t touch his spirit.
Johannesburg, South Africa (30 April 2026) – Anthony Stearns is proof that there is life to be lived after tragedy.
While playing lock for Wanderers Rugby Club in 1996, Anthony sustained a life-changing C5/C6 injury at the age of 23. With the vital support of The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund, Anthony navigated the daunting transition from acute medical care to a new reality.
Despite the challenges that followed, Antony has built a life filled with purpose and gratitude alongside his devoted wife and their beautiful daughter, Jemma.
Today, Antony works independently as a freelancer, using his advertising skills to develop strategic plans for companies. His determination to remain active and engaged in his work speaks to the resilience and drive that have carried him forward over the years.
During a visit from The Players’ Fund’s Shoneé Cornelissen, Antony shared how something as simple as compression socks has had a profound impact on his health.
Having previously battled septicaemia, he emphasised how much they have helped him and highly recommends them to others facing similar challenges, describing them as a true game changer in managing his condition.
When speaking about the future, Antony’s goals are grounded in the things that matter most: living a happy, healthy and self-sustaining life.
At the same time, he continues to dream big and hopes to complete his doctorate in Behavioural Economics in the near future – another step in a journey defined by perseverance, growth and determination.
Anthony’s life today isn’t defined by the tragedy of that day, but by the gratitude and joy he finds in the present. His journey is proof that while we cannot always control what happens on the field, we can choose to build a beautiful, meaningful life long after the final whistle.
