After a serious rugby injury led to severe spinal complications, the family is now appealing for help to get their teenage son the urgent surgery he needs.
South Africa (27 May 2026) – A mother is appealing for help after her teenage son’s rugby dream was suddenly cut short by a serious spinal injury that has now left him living with constant pain.
In 2024, it started as an injury that has now turned into a long and emotional medical journey for the family. After months of physiotherapy with little improvement, further scans revealed severe damage to the discs in his lower back.
Doctors initially advised the young rugby player to step away from the sport for a year and focus on recovery. But during a recent follow-up appointment in May 2026, the family received heartbreaking news that his condition had worsened significantly.
He has now been booked for urgent spinal surgery. His mother, who is raising two teenagers on her own, says the financial pressure has become overwhelming after discovering that their medical aid would not cover the procedure.
“He was an incredible rugby player with such a passion for the sport he loved most,” she shared.
In her appeal for support, she shared that all she wants is “for him to have a chance at living without constant pain again”.
The family is now hoping that donations, messages of support and shares on social media can help them raise the funds needed for the operation and recovery ahead.
While rugby may have been a huge part of his life, his loved ones are simply hoping to see him healthy, comfortable and able to enjoy being a young person again.
