Public parks, community spaces and local landmarks are getting some extra care thanks to a group of motivated young learners.
Johannesburg, South Africa (24 June 2026) – Most Grade 8 learners spend their first year of high school finding their feet. At Jeppe High School for Boys, a group of learners are also rolling up their sleeves and helping to make a visible difference in their community.
As part of an ongoing community outreach project, the boys have been spending time outside the classroom, armed with gloves and refuse bags, working to clean and restore public spaces in and around Kensington and Jeppe.
The initiative has seen learners tackle a number of community areas, including Rhodes Park, Bailey Park, the Scottish War Memorial precinct and the grounds surrounding Jeppe High Preparatory School.
The clean-up efforts have transformed sections of public areas that many residents use every day, while giving the learners a hands-on opportunity to contribute to the neighbourhood they call home.
For residents passing through these parks and public spaces, the results are easy to see. For the boys involved, however, the lessons may last much longer.
