When three friends found a tortoise in their neighbourhood, they didn’t just walk by. They packed it safely and walked kilometres to the SPCA to ensure it was out of harm’s way!
Kloof, South Africa (24 June 2026) – What began as an ordinary day of playing together in their neighbourhood of Wyebank, north-west of Durban, turned into an unexpected discovery for three young boys, Luyanda, Manda and Mnqoa.
The three boys came across a stranded tortoise crossing their path. Instead of ignoring it, taking it back home, or causing it any harm, they chose instead to get it help and take it to where it had the best chance of survival and expert care.
And so, they carefully placed it in a plastic bag and embarked on a long walk – a determined trek to the Kloof and Highway SPCA, with one of the boys gently cradling the bag close to his chest the entire way.
SPCA staff were standing at reception when the young trio arrived at their doorstep, eager to hand over something.
Once inside, the staff could make out something moving in the bag as one of the boys carefully opened it, revealing a tortoise!
“Luyanda, Manda and Mnqoa had walked all the way from Wyebank to bring the tortoise to the SPCA because they knew it would be safe with us,” the SPCA said.
The little creature has since been taken to the Centre of Rehabilitation and Wildlife (CROW), where it will receive the care it needs.
And the three young heroes? They were given a lift back home by SPCA staff so they didn’t have to make the long journey back in the sun.
“The Kloof and Highway SPCA would like to say a very big thank you to these three young men who kept the tortoise safe and made such a long trip to help. You are true animal heroes, and we are so grateful for your kindness.”
