When severe weather devastated the Western Cape, SUPERSPAR Khayelitsha and SPAR Mandela stepped up alongside community leaders to turn a crisis into a story of hope, delivering hot soup and thousands of food hampers to the families rebuilding their lives.

Western Cape, South Africa (24 June 2026) – About a month ago, the Western Cape was struck by abnormally severe weather conditions that caused destruction and devastated the region’s most vulnerable residents.

In the wake of the storms, SUPERSPAR Khayelitsha and SPAR Mandela, two stores rooted right in the heart of the heavily impacted informal housing sectors, immediately stepped up to help their neighbours.

The crisis hit close to home. After witnessing the destruction firsthand and receiving heartbreaking photos and videos from their own affected staff members, store management launched an initiative to serve hot, nourishing soup to the resilient community members who were working to clean up and rebuild their homes.

SPAR’s fundraising and efforts to help quickly amplified into a much bigger relief effort. Partnering with community leaders through the Ndithini Ndido Foundation, over 5,000 substantial food hampers were packed and distributed.

To ensure the aid went exactly where it was needed most, local ward councillors and community representatives joined the bulk distribution event. Their local knowledge was invaluable, helping to identify the hardest-hit families and ensuring every single relief parcel reached the neediest households in the disaster-stricken area.

Calvin Muzondo, Operations Manager for the SPAR stores, emphasised that SUPERSPAR Khayelitsha and SPAR Mandela remain deeply committed to the SPAR ethos of operating in the community, for the community.

“We give back to the community that supports us, and we stand ready to assist wherever we can,” said Muzondo.
