South Africa battled through a dramatic final and a tense semi-final to finish their campaign with championship gold.
Cairo, Egypt (02 October 2026) – Team South Africa have gone all the way at the U19 All Africa Championship 2026, fighting through a dramatic final and a few serious moments of “okay, we’ve got this” before eventually getting their hands on the gold.
The South African badminton team capped off their campaign with a brilliant comeback against Algeria in a three-game final, turning things around after a difficult start to finish as U19 All Africa Champions.
It was Algeria who landed the first blow, taking the opening game 55-42 and putting Team SA on the back foot.
But South Africa weren’t about to let one game decide the championship.
They responded in the second, showing plenty of composure under pressure to take it 55-49 and force a deciding third game.
And when it came down to the final game, Team SA came out firing.
South Africa took control from the opening point, putting Algeria under constant pressure and dictating the pace. The crucial rallies went their way as the team kept its composure and powered to a convincing 55-41 victory.
Gold secured. Championship won. Earlier in the tournament, Team SA had opened their campaign in dominant fashion, getting the better of Zimbabwe in both games, winning 55-12 and 55-26.
South Africa suffered a shaky start, losing the opening game 55-33. With their place in the final on the line, there was no room for another slip-up.
It’s a gold medal that sums up this South African campaign rather nicely: plenty of pressure and a team that simply refused to stay down.
