South Africa has confirmed a talented squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with athletes from across the country preparing to compete on one of the world’s biggest multi-sport stages.

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 June 2026) – With less than a month to go before the opening ceremony, Team South Africa is ready to take on the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with a squad of 112 athletes selected to compete across 10 sporting codes in Glasgow, Scotland.

The team brings together a blend of seasoned campaigners and exciting new faces, with several athletes preparing for their Commonwealth Games debut alongside stars who have proudly represented South Africa on the international stage before.

Among the familiar names is swimming legend Chad le Clos, who will compete at his sixth Commonwealth Games. He heads to Glasgow with the chance to become the most decorated male athlete in Commonwealth Games history, needing just one more medal to move clear of the current record he shares with Australia’s Phillip Adams and England’s Mick Gault.

Also returning are Birmingham 2022 gold medallists Pieter Coetzé and Lara van Niekerk, who will once again lead South Africa’s swimming hopes after memorable performances four years ago.

South Africa will be represented in athletics, swimming, para sport, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, judo, netball, bowls, weightlifting and wheelchair basketball, highlighting the country’s strength across a wide range of disciplines.

The 2026 Games will feature six fully integrated para-sports, with Team SA fielding athletes in para-athletics, para-swimming, para bowls, para powerlifting and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.

Leading the South African contingent will be Chef de Mission Bongiwe Msomi, herself a former Commonwealth Games flag bearer and one of the country’s most respected sporting leaders.

Speaking at the team announcement, SASCOC president Barry Hendricks backed the squad to continue South Africa’s proud Commonwealth Games tradition.

“It goes without saying that we have the utmost confidence in the squad being delivered to Glasgow to fly our flag high.”

South Africa will also reward medal-winning performances in Glasgow, with athletes and coaches set to receive financial incentives for gold, silver and bronze medals.
