From supporting Funda Nenja’s animal welfare lessons to helping Ladles of Love bring Mandela Day magic to classrooms across SA, Hero in my Hood is spreading warmth this winter by empowering children through education, kindness and creativity.

South Africa (30 June 2026) – Summer may have flown past, but the warmth that comes from helping others can help carry us through chilly winter mornings and nights.

This is the sentiment behind Hero in my Hood, a charity that considers itself fortunate to work hand in hand with organisations and people who put helping others at the very top of their agendas.

A Gift to Empower Mpophomeni Youth

Because education is the key to change, the team recently sent a generous gift of posters, story activity books, colouring books, badges and brochures to Funda Nenja, an animal welfare NPO that fosters a love for dogs in Mpophomeni, KZN.

“For a long time, we have used the wonderful teaching resources available from Hero in my Hood, as we have found them perfect for our educational purposes. We were recently blessed with an incredibly generous gift to be used for educational material. This will enable us to continue presenting meaningful lessons to the children of Mpophomeni. Together, we can make a difference,” Funda Nenja said.

Mandela Day Hands-On Giving

Meanwhile, on the other side of the province, Hero in my Hood was approached by Cape Town charity Ladles of Love to do the artwork for the ‘Create’ section of its upcoming mammoth Mandela Day event.

Ladles of Love works to ensure that thousands of vulnerable children and destitute people receive regular healthy meals through its programmes in the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Gauteng.

Their Mandela Day event aims to bring people together for 67 minutes of purpose and help nurture future leaders through the Ladles of Love Hands-On Events.

“Individuals and corporates are invited to join this event. Words can’t describe the magnitude and ‘gees’ of this amazing happening,” Hero in my Hood said.

As part of Hero in my Hood’s own contribution to the Mandela Day festivities, the team has also produced posters with a story, flashcards and an activity book that participants will colour in at the event. These materials will then be distributed to classrooms across South Africa to teach children about healthy foods.

“After the event, these materials will be available for download from our Hero website,” Hero in my Hood added.

Help Hero Support Your Hood

The organisation is also offering loads of free downloads on its website to print and keep children busy during the winter school holidays.

Hero in my Hood strives to empower children by encouraging them to be courageous and kind, and to feel empathy and compassion for animals, people and the environment – because they are the future.

Hero is primarily self-funded. To support its good work, buy or sponsor a book or donate here.
