A special Stellenbosch outreach programme will connect young learners with international chess leaders to promote confidence, leadership and lifelong learning.
Stellenbosch, South Africa (01 July 2026) – Chess will take centre stage in Stellenbosch this week, but for dozens of young learners, the most important moves won’t happen on the board.
As part of the 2026 FIDE ISCF World Schools Team Championship, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the International School Chess Federation (ISCF) will host a special community outreach programme aimed at showing how chess can unlock opportunities, build confidence and shape brighter futures.
Around 50 learners from three underserved schools in the Stellenbosch area will gather at Paul Roos Gymnasium for an afternoon of inspiration, mentorship and hands-on chess activities alongside some of the sport’s most influential figures.
Leading the initiative will be FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, entrepreneur and chess patron Timur Turlov, and internationally respected coach Robert Katende.
Katende is widely known as the mentor of Ugandan chess star Phiona Mutesi, whose remarkable rise from the streets of Kampala inspired Disney’s Queen of Katwe.
The programme will explore how chess can be far more than a competitive sport, highlighting its role in education, personal growth and community development. Learners will also have the opportunity to sit across the chessboard from international guests, playing friendly games while interacting with some of the biggest names in world chess.
The outreach will conclude with a recognition ceremony, where participating learners will receive commemorative gifts and certificates before joining the visiting guests for photographs.
Organisers say the initiative reflects a broader commitment to ensuring the tournament leaves a lasting legacy within the local community.
The championship will also feature an in-person ISCF Master Class presented by Robert Katende, titled “Chess as a Tool for Life Development.” Drawing on more than 20 years of experience using chess to transform lives.
