The Northwood knights are still the marimba kings of South Africa!
Durban, South Africa (02 July 2026) – The Durban-based boys’ school has once again been crowned South African National Schools Marimba Champions, successfully defending their title after two days of electric performances at Michaelhouse.
The competition has grown fast. This year saw 41 bands from across the country take to the stage, nearly double the 23 that competed at last year’s inaugural event – proof that the marimba magic is spreading.
Northwood’s Senior Marimba Competition Band, guided by Mr Gale and Mrs Steenkamp, placed 1st in the Boys High School category, with hosts Michaelhouse taking 2nd. When the overall scores were tallied, Northwood came out on top once again, with Michaelhouse in 2nd and St John’s DSG rounding out the top three.
The school’s Juniors weren’t far behind, placing 1st in the High School Development Band category. There was individual glory too, with Northwood’s Obed Ephraim named Best Drummer of the entire competition, beating out talent from all 41 competing schools.
Northwood School shared their pride in the win!
“A massive congratulations to our Senior Marimba Competition Band on taking the trophy at the South African National Schools Marimba Competition!…” the school says. “…To our boys for always giving it their all – we are so proud of you!”
Northwood also thanked Mr Gale and Mrs Steenkamp for their hard work and passion for marimba, along with Michaelhouse for hosting two days of world-class music, and Jeppe High School for Boys for their support on the sidelines.
Michaelhouse, for their part, said the growing competition reinforces their commitment to preserving and promoting African musical traditions, and they’re already looking forward to an even bigger event next year.
“We are proud of all students who participated and look forward to seeing this event grow even larger in the years to come.”
Once again, Northwood proves why they’re the team to beat – congratulations to every Knight who took to that stage with mallets in hand! Check out the championship finals and prize-giving below.
