When a little boy fell during his first parkrun, a kind oupa stopped to clean his wounds, offer encouragement and help him find the courage to get back up and finish what he started.
Johannesburg, South Africa (10 July 2026) – Running isn’t easy. Whether you are aiming for a jog around your neighbourhood or completing your first 5 km, the physical and mental effort often looks the same: sweat, heavy breathing and pushing through discomfort. Yet alongside this, there is often a loyal and welcoming running community that offers a real sense of closeness.
Two weeks ago, a young boy who found himself fatigued and overwhelmed during his first parkrun was helped by a senior runner, whose compassion – together with the encouragement of the community around him – gave him the courage to dust himself off and keep going.
It was on the morning of 27 June when the eager young runner lined up at the starting point of his first-ever Delta Parkrun and sprang forward as soon as the directors signalled the group to start.
“Motivated by hope and anticipation, he was determined to give his best. Two kilometres in, he stumbled and fell into the dry dirt. Agonising, sore and cold, he burst into tears,” Delta Parkrun shared online, recounting the boy’s ordeal.
A few seconds later, a runner stopped to help him. The kind grandpa retrieved a medical kit from his backpack, swabbed and bandaged the boy’s wounds, and then offered gentle yet witty reassurance, telling him: “You are bleeding; that’s good. It shows you are still alive.”
According to those who witnessed the sweet moment, the grandpa’s gesture managed to bring a small smile to the fallen boy’s face.
“With that, the caring fellow park runner gently placed his own water bottle in the little boy’s hands and, without seeking gratitude or payback, rejoined the run. What a hero.”
With that help and a few additional words of encouragement from the other runners, the boy got back on his feet. He rejoined the run, persevered to the finish and recorded his first parkrun!
While it may not have turned out the way he had imagined (perhaps crossing the finish line with lightning speed in a matter of minutes), this little boy experienced something far more impactful.
The run was hard, but just when he thought he couldn’t go any further, an unexpected hero stopped to help, cleaned his wounds, offered water and shared a few words of encouragement. It was a moment of humanity and genuine compassion he never anticipated that Saturday morning, but one we have a feeling will stay with him for a long while to come!
