South Africa wrapped up a successful week against Malaysia, with Kenton Melville starring as the team sealed a 3-0 series win.
South Africa (13 July 2026) – South Africa’s men’s hockey team ended their five-Test series against Malaysia on a high, producing another polished display to complete an unbeaten week and take the series 3-0.
The series highlighted just how much confidence this South African side is building. Match after match, the hosts continued to find another gear, combining disciplined defence with clinical finishing to stay one step ahead of their visitors.
Despite already having the series in the bag and giving captain Dayaan Cassiem a well-earned rest for the final encounter, South Africa showed the depth within their squad by delivering one of their strongest performances of the week.
Malaysia made a brighter start when Syed Cholan converted a penalty corner to put the visitors ahead.
South Africa’s response was immediate.
A clever pass from Mustapha Cassiem released Kenton Melville, who calmly brought the ball under control before finding the back of the net to restore parity.
Melville struck again before the half-time break, putting the hosts ahead after another confident finish to send South Africa into the interval with the advantage.
The second half belonged to the South Africans.
Melville completed his maiden international hat-trick, becoming the first South African men’s player to score three goals in a match since Mustapha Cassiem achieved the feat during last year’s African Cup of Nations final.
The goals kept coming as Ayakha Mthlane capitalised during a penalty-corner scramble before Carlon Mentoor added another from a set piece to widen the gap.
The five-match series underlined the progress this group has made, with different players stepping up throughout the week and giving the coaching staff plenty of positives ahead of the challenges still to come.
