Powerlifting Champion Sean Manders is Taking One More Shot at the World Stage

Sean Manders became a world champion at 40, stepped away from the sport at the top of his game, and now, at 50, he’s fighting for the chance to win it all again.

Johannesburg, South Africa (16 July 2026) – In 2016, at the age of 40, Sean stood on top of the world as the IPF World Powerlifting Champion. In a sport where every kilogram matters and every lift demands years of dedication, winning a world title is an extraordinary achievement. To do it at 40 made it even more remarkable. Then, with the world at his feet, he made a decision few athletes ever do. He walked away. On top. On his own terms.

A decade passed. Most people assumed that chapter had closed for good. After all, 50-year-olds aren’t supposed to be chasing world titles. They’re expected to become coaches, share stories about the glory days and cheer from the sidelines while someone else takes their place.

Sean never accepted that script. Earlier this year, he stepped back onto the platform at the South African Powerlifting Championships and reminded everyone exactly who he is. He went on to win the national title again, and he also broke more records, proving that strength isn’t measured by age but by determination and the willingness to keep showing up.

Now his sights are set on something even bigger.

Sean has qualified for the IPF World Championships and is chasing a second world title, ten years after his first. If he succeeds, it won’t simply be another medal added to an already impressive career, it will send a message to anyone who has ever believed their best years are behind them. This isn’t about reliving the past. It’s about creating a new future. The only obstacle standing between Sean and that world stage is funding. He needs R85,000 to cover the costs of representing South Africa at the championships, and while that number may seem significant, it’s a small investment in a story that has the power to inspire thousands. His community has already rallied around him and raised over R25,000, that means he is 30% of the way towards his goal.

This isn’t only Sean’s journey anymore. It’s for every person who has been told they’re too old to change careers, too old to chase a dream, too old to learn a new skill or too old to believe that something extraordinary is still waiting for them. Every successful lift Sean makes challenges that thinking and replaces it with something far more powerful: possibility.
